This is a smoothie concoction I came up with while researching cures for hormone-induced acne. While that may not sound too appealing, food is the best health care, and this smoothie is as delicious as it is nutrient-packed.

So what ingredients are good for a glowing complexion? Orange for texture-improving vitamin C, coconut oil for essential fats, turmeric and ginger for brightening, maca powder for hormone balancing, spirulina for zinc, iron and deep sea minerals, and plenty of greens. I try and keep the fruit content here relatively low, as sugar is not good for acne flair.

While visiting my pretty mama in the lovely town of Pahoa, Hawaii, my favorite things to nibble on are all of the different unique and locally grown fruits.

 The mamey sapote is just as fun to say as it is delicious. Native to southern Mexico, the sweet and creamy fruit is rumored to be an aphrodisiac. Technically a berry, its flavor runs on the mild nutty side, much like an almond or an avocado. Mamey sapote is extremely high in potassium, so eat up!

 The star apple is beautiful and unique, with a sweet pulp that reminds me of a plum and a weird milky sap. However, the skin is inedible; I’ve been scooping out the innards with a spoon and eating them as is, or adding them to breakfast smoothies. Yum!

 The egg fruit is seriously bizarre in both flavor and texture, and while they are delicious, I have found I can’t eat too much at once. With a mellow, sweet flavor and a super dry texture like an egg yolk, the yellow fruit is a good source of calcium and phosphorous, as well as the aminos Tryptophan, Methionine and Lysine.

 

Of all these exotic fruits, my favorite—hands down—is the rambutan. This fruit is so fun to look at, and once you peel away the soft, spikey exterior, you will find the flesh has a flavor and texture like a peeled grape. The rambutan is high in potassium and vitamin C. The easiest way to enjoy it is slice the skin into two halves and pop out the inside. Watch out for the pit, though!

While in Hawaii, I’ve been eating so much fruit my blood must be sweeter, because the mosquitoes are singling me out like I’m the last donut in the shop.

One fruit I am staying far, far away from, however, is the ever-stanky durian! Yelch!
