Stuff I Get Off On: Lush Handmade Cosmetics

Sweet, cosmetic heaven

Sweet, cosmetic heaven

You guys, I have a bit of a problem. I can’t stop buying Lush cosmetics. When I went vegan, I stopped wearing much make-up because I had no idea where to look for quality, cruelty-free products. I seriously did not wear lipstick for about 3 years. Tragedy. Blahblahblah, back to Lush!

The company has been around for a long time, and have become increasingly more awesome with every passing year. Unfortunately I did not find them until THIS year, thus the lack of lipstick in my life. Anyway, using organic ingredients, they produce hand-made cosmetics, soaps, face product and more. They don’t test on animals, are ethically awesome, use only vegetarian ingredients (some honey, so not all products are vegan), and have a great green policy. But that’s just their politics! Let’s talk products.

When you walk into a Lush store it feels like you’re walking into a candy store. It’s an absolutely edible experience that captivates and excites every one of your senses. Counters are littered with buckets of weigh-it-yourself products. Bins of water lay around so associates can assist you as you sample body and face washes on your skin. Vibrant colors pop on every shelf—electric shades of lipstick and eyeshadow stand out from their more neutral counterparts. You can try on everything. Small refrigerators showcase products that—containing no wonky preservatives—must be stored in a fridge for freshness. What I’m saying is, Lush doesn’t fuck around. So while you should certainly buy their stuff online if you have to, if there is a store anywhere near you, for the love of all things cosmetically wondrous, please go in.

While not all of their products are vegan, they are all labeled very clearly so you know before you slather it on. Okay, now some of my favorite products:

0DD17D1C-ECCC-4DE7-92B8-5EB6D66DC156Dark Angels Cleanser – This coal-based cleanser is the best exfoliant I have ever used. I have oily skin, and it has seriously done wonders with clearing and softening my complexion. I use it about 3 – 4 times a week, and it smells like licorice! It’s pretty messy though, so I only use it in the shower so I don’t piss off the roomies by splashing brackish water all over the sink.

Liquid Lipstick – I have two shades of this stuff, Ambition and Believe. They are pricey ($18.95 each) but so worth it–I have never fallen so hard for a lip product before. When you apply it, it starts off quite thin and then sets for color that doesn’t mark up my coffee cup or my boyfriend’s face. When you want to take it off, you have to specifically remove it. I have washed my face after a long day, and woken up in the morning to find that I still have traces of it on my mouth. Since they are expensive and the bottles are small, I don’t wear it every day…I hoard it. You can also dot it on cheeks for a splash of color, but do so sparsely—it’s concentrated and hard to remove, so you don’t want accidental clown-cheeks.

Obsessed with the tiny bottles!

Cream eyeshadow – This was the first cream eyeshadow I really got hopped up about. I am usually a huge fan of Urban Decay powder shadows (except they were just bought by L’Oreal and I cried and cried and cried). But I bought a cream shadow from Lush in color Sophisticated—a shimmer bronzy-brown color—and am all about it. It’s really easy to blend, and the color sticks around all day and doesn’t gunk up in my creases. I wear it to work and apply an extra coat for a brighter color when I am going out. It’s pricey (also $18.95) but a little goes a long way so I consider it an investment.

I also love Lush bath bombs although currently I share a tub with several roomies so I don’t deem it clean enough for soaking, and their vegan conditioner called Veganese. Cute.

Tell me, what are your favorite Lush products? Other beauty products?? My foxy iEatGrass intern Elyssa raved about their Cupcake face mask, and I plan to buy it the next time I venture into a Lush location.

I am absolutely in love with Lush and have been planning on doing a post about it soon! Everything I’ve tried has been fantastic! I’m currently using None of Your Beeswax Lip Balm, Mint Julips Lip Scrub, Ultrabalm, Charity Pot Lotion, Liquid Eyeliner (independent), and have the R&B Hair Moisturizer and/or the Big Tease Styling Gel in my hair everyday! Wow that’s a lot of stuff, but I was super lucky to get all 4 Lush products I asked for for Christmas! :)

I started to break out like, Bad. And I was getting frustrated! I tried harsh skin care products and gentle ones none gave me that ” it’s my holy grail product ” feel, so I kept buying more. And more. And more, but I was starting to get worried about all these chemicals that I’m putting on my face! Sme were so harsh they made my oily skin dry out. Like.. No. So I decided to search for more natural and effective products that would be good for a new skin care routine. I than heard of lush, and I was like ” … Wait that store that sells soap? ” yeah I seriously had no idea what lush was and SERIOUSLY had no idea that they selled anything other than soap. So I headed to my local lush and purchased this facial exfoliant. Just to try it out. And I gotta tell you, this thing works wonders. It helped get rid of all those flaky dry patches I had on the side of my mouth and nose like it was no big deal. It also improved my skin texture it seemed sooo much softer and just overall looked better, just by this one product. I can’t wait to hit lush again and purchase a daily skin care routine !
